Frequently Asked Questions

Am I (or is my child) old enough to start taking percussion lessons?

I don’t require students to be a specific age - but most students start playing percussion around 5th or 6th grade.

It is beneficial to take weekly lessons to see steady improvement. That is true at any age, so whether you are a beginner, a high school student, or an adult learner, now is a great time to sign up!

What will we work on in lessons?

Every student is unique. You have your own interests, goals, strengths, weaknesses, and experiences. I will meet you where you are, and help you formulate goals (both short- and long-term) and concrete steps to take to achieve those goals.

That being said, there are many “disciplines” we can look at (classical; jazz; marching) which can all be further broken down into different “areas” (within classical percussion: snare drum / marimba / timpani; jazz drum set / jazz vibes; marching includes drum line and front ensemble) - we will study any and all of these as you need!

How will you create a safe learning environment?

I work with youth through many different programs (including DSO, Dallas College, DISD, NTX Soccer), and I am background checked annually. Student safety is very important to me. Each teaching location is unique, but at minimum, I am aware of exit plans in the event of fire, severe weather, etc. I am always open to conversations with students and parents about specific safety-related questions they may have.

How long is each lesson?

Lessons may be as short as 30 minutes or as long as 90 minutes. We will communicate about lesson when you apply.
